Since it first went into service in 1958, the Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire
Department has continued to grow with the Township. Approximately one hundred
operational and support personnel make up the all volunteer department. Members
hold multiple state certifications as firefighters, vehicle rescue technicians,
emergency medical technicians, and water rescue technicians and continually
train and practice to keep their specialized skills current.
The fire station is located at 800 Oberlin Road and houses two fire engines, a heavy rescue truck, a tanker, an attack unit, a rescue boat and a chief’s truck. The department is trained and equipped to deal with most fire and rescue situations. The department receives mutual aid assistance from, and provides service to, surrounding communities and responds to approximately 600 calls each year.
The fire department works closely with the Township Commissioners and the Office of Code Enforcement to ensure fire safe construction in the Township and supports fire and life safety issues at the state and federal level.
The Lower Swatara Volunteer Fire Department offers training and presentations to Township businesses, schools, and civic, church and youth groups. The department firmly believes time spent on such efforts may reduce the need for a future emergency response if residents and workers in the Township are knowledgeable and prepared in the area of fire prevention and response.
